Samba de roda

Samba de roda in the Noite do Forró, 18.2.2017, Lavaklubi Helsinki.

Samba de roda is the most traditional form of samba and it originated in the state of Bahia among the african slaves that we working on the plantations in the Recôncavo region.  It has strong african roots and it´s one of the most important expressions of Afro-Brazilian culture.

In samba de roda music, dance and singing are united. It is practiced in a circle (roda) which is formed by the singers, dancer and musicians. There is no choreography in samba de roda, the dance is based in improvisation. There is either one woman or woman-men couple dancing in the middle of the roda. They play with the steps and gestures and communicate with each others and the musicians. It is like a communal game in which everybody participates.

The energy in samba de roda is really contagious and the party can go on the whole night!
